Six Nato warships and three South African vessels (the frigates Amatola and Isandlwana and the submarine Manthatisi) participated.

Shortly before her departure from Cape Town, I was one of two shipping scribes who boarded the Dutch frigate Evertsen, and off we went. With the submarine on our port beam, we ventured further south where the submarine dived.

A few hours later, the fleet formed a protective cordon around the German replenishment vessel Spessart, the supposed target of a submarine attack that the rest of the fleet were tasked to repel.
