Ratepayers' group warns of risks in City's 2050 vision

CAPE Town's 2050 long-term plan promises safer streets, cheaper transport, and 50000 new housing opportunities a year. It also sets out ambitious goals to double the economy and cut the murder rate to 25 per 100000 people. But the Cape Town Collective Ratepayers’ Association (CTCRA) says these promises may come at a cost residents cannot afford - and that the City has not yet shown the numbers.

Residents may also have to wait 25 years to see many of these improvements.

Interim chairperson Bas Zuidberg said the association supports the idea of long-term planning.

“Tt is important to have a vision of the future, combined with a rough action plan, if a city is to be successful at achieving it,” he said.

He added, however, that the City is pushing ahead without addressing the financial burden that could fall on households.
