Hero's welcome for top matric with special needs

CHEERS, applause and emotion filled the grounds of Jan Kriel School in Kuils River yesterday as staff and learners gave a hero's welcome to Takunda Muchuweni, South Africa's top matric candidate with special education needs.
Takunda, who achieved an exceptional seven distinctions — including a perfect 100% for Business Studies — was greeted with pride and celebration as she returned to the school that shaped her remarkable journey.
Deputy head Justin Pretorius, who taught Takunda Business Studies, said her achievement marked a historic moment for the school.
“I had the privilege of being Takunda’s Business Studies teacher, a subject where she got 100%,” Pretorius said. “She achieved a great aggregate with seven distinctions, which is something our school has never achieved.”
Takunda lives with cerebral palsy and congenital myopathy, but Pretorius said her disabilities never defined her potential.
