Former police reservist arrested for child rape

POLICE have confirmed the arrest of a former SAPS reservist in Mitchell’s Plain on allegations of raping a 10-year-old girl and sexually assaulting her mother.
The suspect made an appearance in the Mitchell’s Plain Magistrate's Court this week following his arrest.
Police spokesperson, FC van Wyk, said the matter was now in the hands of their Family, Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS).
Crime whistle-blower, Zona Morton, said it was a sad reality that the judicial system did not impose hefty sentences on such offences.
“The 4th quarter crime stats revealed a shocking increase in violent crimes against women and children,” she said.
“Despite the president declaring GBVF+ a pandemic, the judicial system has not reflected harsh punishments for rape specifically against children.
