'It's not all about tears': Group calls for new volunteers

A RETIRED district nurse is encouraging others to volunteer with Sue Ryder’s Grief Kind Spaces, as the bereavement support service continues to grow across the East of England.

Kim Brown, 71, has been volunteering at the Huntingdon Grief Kind Space for the last six months, inspired by the care her husband received at Sue Ryder St John’s Hospice in Moggerhanger, Bedfordshire, before he died seven years ago.

“My husband’s last days were so peaceful and beautiful,” said Kim, who is from Hartford.

“I wanted to give something back, having received so much care and support myself.

“Grief stays with you forever, but volunteering helps me channel that into something positive.”

Kim describes the weekly Huntingdon group as a warm, uplifting community where people feel able to speak openly about their experiences of loss.

Over time, she says, the sessions have become a place not just for shared sadness, but for connection.
