New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced she is stepping down in a shock resignation ahead of a election later general this year.

Ardern, 42, doesn't have the energy or inspiration to seek re-election, she told reporters Thursday in Napier where her Labour Party is holding a caucus meeting. She said every moment leading her country was a privilege, but she didn't have enough in reserve to seek another term.
