FM: May ease tariffs if no harm to economy

The government may take back the increased tariffs on products that do not harm the domestic industry, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Tuesday.
"I will lift tariffs on them (products) provided it doesn't intended or unintended hurt my own capacity to produce. I will have to balance the two," Sitharaman said at an event hosted by Republic Media Network in New Delhi.
Her statement has come after US President-elect Donald Trump during campaigning called India the "biggest" tariff charger and an "abuser" of import taxes. He had vowed to impose reciprocal taxes if re-elected.
In 2020, he had even called India the 'tariff king'.
