Jobs at risk as store launched here is sold for just 'nominal fee'

THE owner of Poundland, which opened its first-ever UK shop in Burton, has sold the business for a “nominal” fee.
Thousands of high street jobs are at risk as Pepco has announced that it has sold discount chain Poundland to investment firm Gordon Brothers.
The well-known budget retailer has been a popular fixture on British high streets for decades, but the retail group has been seeking a buyer in recent months amid financial changes.
When Burton’s Octagon shopping centre opened in 1990 one of the first stores to move in was Poundland, which marked the start of the chain’s rise to fame.
Pepco Group, which has owned Poundland since 2016, made the sale after a sharp downturn in trading over the past year.
