Improvement by seconds but late goal settles clash

HOCKEY: Burton men’s seconds were beaten 1-0 by Newark firsts.

The reverse fixture was a 9-O thrashing, but this was a very different affair.

The game was fast, open and physical with both teams moving the ball quickly. Burton had the better of the first half creating numerous chances through Matt Evans and Neil Massey who combined well throughout the game.

The best of these fell to Conor Woodcock but his shot was stopped by the impressive Newark keeper.

Newark also had their chances but the Burton back line of Ben Meir, AJ Taylor, Josh Bullock and James Fox were solid throughout and even if Newark broke through Mark Bignall was on hand to tidy things up.

Isaac Farmer was immense in midfield and he carved through the Newark defence but couldn't get his shot away.
