PLANS HAVE NOW BEEN SCRAPPED AT 11TH HOUR

- By EDDIE BISKNELL Local democracy reporter

Council's planned £19m depot is 'no longer affordable'

A SOUTH Derbyshire council has shelved plans to spend the equivalent of its entire annual budget on a new depot at the 11th hour, branding it 'no longer affordable'.

The district council had been on the brink of giving the final sign-off on £18.6 million plans for a new depot for its bin lorries, other vehicles and equipment.

The authority has now approved its budget for the next year, including £20.5 million in spending and a 2.99 per cent council tax increase.

This new depot has been discussed almost entirely in private, and its planned location has never been publicly disclosed.

It was to replace the existing long-held but 'tight' facilities on the Boardman Industrial Estate in Swadlincote.
