Council's gold mine of bits and pieces kept growing!

TO many it may have looked like a pile of bricks and tiles dumped on spare ground near Burton town centre.

But the depot in Newton Road was East Staffordshire District Council’s materials bank.

From humble beginnings in 1978 with just £500 to spend on the scheme, the council had built up stocks worth £8,000 by 1982.

The materials bank included all types of brick, tiles and chimney pots with some dating back more than 100 years.

All of the materials in the yard had been salvaged from buildings in the district which were being demolished.
