Burton reign in the capital with top win

BURTON continued their fine run of form when they visited AFC Wimbledon back in March 2021. Here's a look back at the report by COLSTON CRAWFORD ahead of Saturday's game....

BURTON Albion won their fifth game in a row for the first time in the Football League when they edged past AFC Wimbledon 1-0 at Plough Lane last night.

The last time they won five successive matches, they went on to make it 12 in their Conference promotion season in 2008-09.

Michael Bostwick scored the only goal of the game, a player who was in opposition for Stevenage during the Brewers' club record winning run in the Conference, and the impact Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Dino Maamria are having on the club is looking immeasurable.

Hasselbaink sprang a surprise by dropping Kane Hemmings, who has scored in two successive matches, to the bench, in favour of Michael Fondop.

The striker had been taken off before halftime after conceding a series of free kicks in his last appearance and he conceded one within 30 seconds of the start this time.

Thankfully, the pattern did not continue and, as the half went on, it was he who was being fouled and winning free kicks.

There was not an awful lot going on, though.

Wimbledon had more of the ball to start with and Burton's first two attempts to find Jonny Smith on the right went out of play.

When a pass did find him, Wimbledon's awareness of his threat was evidenced by the fact that they had three men around him.

With nine minutes gone, John Brayford was caught late by Jack Rudoni as he made a headed clearance and was not interested in the Wimbledon player's attempt to apologise.
