YOUNGER readers may struggle to believe me when I recall a time when most of the people I knew had at least one portable TV in their homes.

They were, by today’s standards, big, clunky things that could only describe themselves as portable by virtue of a handle attached to the top of the set. People would move them from room to room, or even take them to their caravan for the weekend. Ours was a faithful companion during my university years.

Of course, most people think they don’t need a portable TV anymore. We've got screens with us at all times that can show us more or less anything we want to watch.

But I disagree. I like a big screen - Martin Scorsese didn’t exercise his genius to create Goodfellas so we could watch it on a 6in screen.
