BRISTOL'S army of amateur photographers have described how they were left angry, dispirited and uncomfortable after Harbour Festival security guards got strict about imposing a ban on 'professional photography.'

'I felt angry' Harbour Festival bosses pledge to rethink ban on cameras

Many have told the Post how they were stopped from taking cameras into some of the festival areas, including Queen Square and the amphitheatre, but in response the festival organisers have promised it won't happen next year.

The Harbour Festival took place over the third weekend in July and saw thousands gather around the Floating Harbour for a range of events from displays in the water to concerts at Queen Square and the amphitheatre. Entry was free to those areas, although there were security bag checks in place.

But many amateur photographers reported that they were denied entry, because security said the festival organisers had imposed a ban on professional photography - and so anyone with a larger than pocket-sized camera was not allowed to take it in.

Photographer Ken Abbott said: “This is an increasing issue at festivals and outdoor events in Bristol, and brings up two issues” he said. “Firstly, Queen Square is a public space and UK law clearly states that all photography is allowed in public spaces - thankfully the UK has some of the most liberal photography laws in the world.
