Athletics Plenty of eye-catching performances at Avon competition

THE annual Avon Schools Championships were held at Yate on Saturday. Although it started off a little wet, the day got better as the time went by.

District teams were competing for the county title with Bath and North East Somerset winning the Year 8 competition, North Somerset the Year 9 competition and Bristol the Year 10/11 competition.

The highlights in terms of performances went to Martha Herringshaw in the Y10/11 100m running 12.2secs, Ewan Sparey in the Y10/11 800m running 1:59, and Kezia Tarzay giving a masterclass in the Y10/11 hurdles to win in 12.2. Dan Webb repeated the South Glos win in the boys hurdles in 11.2secs over 80 metres.

The best race of the day was in the Y10/11 girls 800m where a great tussle between Lily Beazley and Mairi Carver Brown just went the way of the former in a super 2:14.9.

In the field, the pick of the bunch was Mia McMullen’s double in the long and triple jump in Year 10/11, and George Wiley’s excellent high jump of 1:70m in atrocious conditions. He also won the discus for a notable double.
