THE much-maligned rook has a reputation as black as its oily plumage. Vilified as portents of doom and persecuted for devouring freshly-sown crops, all manner of ills have befallen this knowing-eyed and sage member of the crow clan.

Many a rook has ended its days the wrong end of a shotgun or baked in a pie. Spoiler: those four and 20 blackbirds immortalised in the Sing a Song of Sixpence nursery rhyme - they were rooks.
Cookery book recipes for Rook Pie are not its only literary acclaim.
The stanzas of Shakespeare, Tennyson, Clare and others hail the rook’s eponymous call and floppy flight to winter roosts and spring nesting colonies.
