Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), also known as C8, is a man-made chemical that belongs to a larger group of synthetic compounds called perand polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).

These substances are often referred to as 'forever chemicals' because they are extremely stable and do not break down easily in the environment or the human body.

PFOA has been used since the 1940s in various industrial and consumer products due to its ability to resist heat, oil, water, and stains.
