Ruling Labour group slammed over lack of garden waste service

BIRMINGHAM City Council's ruling Labour group has been accused of “incompetence” after saying it could not currently reintroduce the garden waste service.

The seasonal service was suspended last spring due to the ongoing bins strike - despite some subscribers having already paid up.

Residents were soon reimbursed the payments, with the cost of lost income from garden waste being suspended estimated to be £4.4million.

Last week, the Labour-run council said it cannot reintroduce garden waste collections for the time being as the strike rumbles on into its second year.

An opposition councillor has slammed the council over the situation, describing it as the “latest in a long line of failures”.

“Labour's incompetence means Birmingham residents are being let down yet again” Tim Huxtable, shadow cabinet member for environment and Conservative councillor, said.
