Number ones Usyk and Scheffler punch and putt their way to glory

TWO overseas sporting superstars headlined the UK action over the weekend and there will be more to come as the summer continues to thrill.

- GARY NEWBON

Ukraine’s Oleksandr Usyk underlined that he is still very much the best heavyweight boxer in the world while the American Scottie Scheffler won another major tournament - the British Open - as you would expect from the sport's dominant number one player.

Still to come - tonight, the Euro defending champions England meet Italy in this year's semifinal in Geneva (8pm kickoff on ITV) then tomorrow night Spain play Germany in the other semi (8pm in Zurich).

The final will be in Basel at 5pm on Sunday, on both TV channels.

Tomorrow, the cricket Third Test match in this brilliant series between England and India will come from Old Trafford. This will be on Sky, as will the second Rugby Union Test between the British and Irish Lions and Australia from Melbourne. Both start play at 11am UK time.

So, to my comments of all of these major events...

I watched the Usyk-Daniel Dubois fight with all the titles on the line on Paddy Lynch's big TV screen at his Solihull home. Paddy was a manager, trainer and promoter for many years with his brother Tommy. Also present and currently in all Paddy's boxing roles was Jon Pegg and the broadcaster Tom Ross.

We all agreed before the fight that Usyk would win. The three had Usyk winning by knockout. I had him a points winner.
