Sheffield United routed Blues 3-0 in their final game before Christmas after Davies’ team pressed the self-destruct button.

Tyler Bindon and Gustavo Hamer were gifted goals either side of a rash challenge from Tommy Doyle which resulted in him being sent off. Patrick Bamford added the third just after halftime.

After the final whistle, Davies reflected: “It was probably the worst afternoon since I've been here. It’s difficult to take and we have to be honest around that because for a team that has not been fantastic away from home, we made too many mistakes.

“It was the worst possible start. Everything we've been talking about, working on, preparing for, was undermined really in the first few minutes because we conceded in the fifth minute from a corner. It was one of the worst corner goals we've conceded organisationally and strength-wise.

“It was far too easy for the opposition to score and then on 18 minutes obviously a goal down and a man down because of a red card.”

Blues have lost eight of their 12 away games in the Championship and slipped to 14th in the table.

The away fans voiced their displeasure when Davies and his players approached them at full-time.

Addressing that, Davies said: “Well, I love the fans. I think they're brilliant and the vast, vast, vast majority are incredibly, really supportive and clapping and there's a minority there, I’m sure, but they're great. I love the fans.
