North fires its first missiles of 2026
Bangkok Post
|January 05, 2026
North Korea fired multiple ballistic missiles off its east coast yesterday, South Korea's military said, marking its first launch of the year just hours before South Korean President Lee Jae-myung was due to depart for China for a summit.
-
The launch came a day after a US military operation against Pyongyang's socialist ally Venezuela resulted in the capture of President Nicolas Maduro — a long-feared scenario for North Korea's leadership, which has repeatedly accused Washington of seeking regime change.
South Korea's defence ministry said it detected "several projectiles, presumed to be ballistic missiles" fired from near the North Korean capital Pyongyang at about 7.50am on Saturday.
The missiles flew about 900 kilometres, the military said, adding that South Korea and the United States were "closely analysing the specifications" while maintaining "a full readiness posture".
