Anutin orders exit from maritime pact
The cabinet has been instructed to begin preparations to terminate a 25-year-old memorandum of understanding (MoU) used by Thailand and Cambodia as a framework for settling their overlapping maritime boundaries.
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said yesterday that he wanted to begin preliminary work to scrap the contentious document so the new government could take action once it takes office.
Talks are expected to start soon to form a coalition government led by Mr Anutin and the Bhumjaithai Party, following its decisive victory in Sunday’s election.
Thailand and Cambodia signed the document, popularly known as MoU 44, in 2001 (2544 in the Buddhist calendar) to set the direction for negotiations to resolve overlapping offshore territorial claims.
