Govt warns of increasing drowning risks as summer nears

The government has warned of rising drowning risks during the summer months after data showed nearly 1,000 people die each year.

Airin Phanrit, deputy government spokeswoman, said Thailand records the highest number of drowning incidents between March and May. Over the past decade, from 2016 to 2025, an average of 964 people died annually.

Adults aged 45-59 accounted for the largest share of deaths at 27.9%, followed by those aged over 60 at 21.7%, while children under 15 made up 20.3%.

"During school holidays, however, child drownings rise sharply and represent about one-third of annual cases," she said.
