Govt seeks to defuse border rift

Hopes JBC will end Cambodia skirmishes

The government is using mechanisms under the framework of the Joint Boundary Commission (JBC) to address border tensions with Cambodia, says Foreign Affairs Minister Maris Sangiampongsa.

Following a border skirmish near Chong Bok in Nam Yuen district — a disputed border area in Ubon Ratchathani — Mr Maris expressed concern on behalf of the government about the turn of events.

However, Mr Maris also reaffirmed that all actions taken by Thai authorities were in full compliance with both international and domestic law, and were appropriate given the circumstances.

Mr Maris also confirmed the situation along the border has remained calm since then, with all border checkpoints remaining open and operational.

"Immediately after the issue arose, I personally called Cambodian Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn. He agreed on the importance of resolving the matter swiftly," Mr Maris said.
