As the saying goes, the first casualty of war is the truth, and that is exactly what is playing out after the Thai-Cambodian border row exploded into armed conflict yesterday morning.

In a single day, the number of fatalities from Cambodia's attacks on Thai civilian areas rose to at least 11, with more than 30 injured. Such indiscriminate attacks on civilians by the Cambodian army must stop and also be condemned by the international community.
The losses are real, painful and a glaring violation of international law.
Both sides have been trading accusations with the familiar narrative of "they struck first" to justify the use of force. But that is not really the point. And as both sides aim to win, there will be more news manipulation and propaganda as each casts the other as the villain. Soon, they will have to bring the case to the international arena.
