Forum raises concerns over discrimination and honorific titles, writes Poramet Tangsathaporn

A recent seminar discussed ways to end discrimination, gender-based violence and hate crimes against LGBTQ+ people, while also raising concerns over honorific titles being debated by the People’s Party.

The Transmasculine Network for Equality (TransEqual) and allied organ-isations recently hosted a seminar titled "Safely Living with Dignity, Existence and Rights" in Bangkok, focusing on violence against transgender, queer, intersex and non-binary people.

During the discussion, several issues related to honorific titles were raised, with community members addressing concerns and potential impacts if individuals are allowed to voluntarily choose their honorific titles, as proposed by the People's Party.

WEDDING FRAUD

Schemes to trick heterosexual people into obtaining a marriage certificate, medical safety and national security were among the main concerns raised by the public over the issue of honorific titles.

Thitiyanun Nakpor, executive director of the Sisters Foundation, said concerns that heterosexual people might be misled into marriage were misplaced. Marriage is the result of two people getting to know and accept each other over time, she said.
