Damage done to local political process isn't easily repaired

The events of the past few days in South Ayrshire have once again shown how toxic politics can erode public confidence.

Councillor Martin Dowey's resignation as leader of South Ayrshire Council, following the chaos of the meeting on May 1, is just the latest symptom of a political culture that too often prioritises personal positioning over public service. While his eventual decision to step down may bring some resolution, the damage done to trust in the local political process is not so easily repaired.
