Pandemic stress, digital lives and uncertainty reshaping Indian youth's mental health

Lack of awareness about timely treatment is fuelling mental health disorders among young Indian adults, health experts warned at the 77th Annual National Conference of the Indian Psychiatric Society (ANCIPS 2026), calling for urgent shifts in prevention, early diagnosis and care delivery.

During high-level scientific deliberations, experts noted that nearly 60 per cent of mental disorders in India are diagnosed in individuals below the age of 35. They said the Covid-19 pandemic, coupled with economic uncertainty and rapidly changing social structures, has intensified stress, anxiety and depressive symptoms among young people.
