THE summer marked a reset for Exeter following the departure of a number of players who were instrumental in their league and Champions Cup double success three years ago.

Jack Nowell, Joe and Sam Simmonds, Jack Maunder, Luke Cowan-Dickie, Harry Williams, Dave Ewers, Stuart Hogg, Ben Moon, Ian Whitten and Jannes Kirsten either moved on or retired, leaving director of rugby Rob Baxter with a rebuild.
The Chiefs have brought in six players, including the Wales centre Joe Hawkins, but having failed to make the playoffs for the second straight season following six consecutive trips to Twickenham, they have invested in the future.
Exeter were a model of consistency in the 2010s, but last season there was a marked disparity between their record at Sandy Park and their results on the road.
