Three goals in the space of 15 second-half minutes – including a brace from Ollie Banks – saw Paul Cook’s side well on the way to a tenth successive home win before the Spitfires at least made a game of it with late strikes from the National League’s top scorer Paul McCallum and Scott Quigley.

“You’re delighted when the final whistle goes and you’ve won,” beamed a relieved Spireites assistant boss Danny Webb. “Then you’re delighted when you’ve found out that Barnet have lost.

“Eleven points clear at this time is cracking. We don’t ignore then things that we could have done better but we look at the league table tonight and think what a fabulous effort from everyone.”
