The first half was awash with missed opportunities at both ends, with both attacks applying ample pressure. For Chester, Iwan Murray and Elliott Whitehouse caused trouble, while the Mariners full backs attacked from the flanks throughout.

Marine's best chance of the first half came to new boy Manasse Mampala. His shot beat the Chester keeper but not the far post.

Marine self-generated their diciest moments through unforced errors, and eventually Chester capitalised in the 31st minute. Caton's header was saved by the trialist goalkeeper, but the ball landed nicely for Whitehouse, who fired Chester into the lead.
