India's Maritime Leap from 'CHIP TO SHIP'

THE WEEK India

|

October 19, 2025

Long before India dreamt of reaching the stars, it learned to read the winds and tides. From the ancient docks of Lothal to the modern shipyards of Kochi, the sea has always whispered possibilities. Today, those possibilities are turning into a grander purpose. India is scripting a maritime revival, one that could define the nation's next great economic leap.

India's Maritime Leap from 'CHIP TO SHIP'

Over the past decade, the Government of India’s sustained push to transform the maritime sector has moved from vision to velocity. From shipbuilding and ship-repair, to green ports and coastal logistics, the focus is clearly to make India a global maritime power by 2047, the centenary of Independence. This ambition aligns seamlessly with AmritKaal, the nation’s blueprint for a developed, self-reliant India.

That vision was underlined sharply yet again recently when the Prime Minister, addressing the ‘Samudra se Samriddhi’ initiative in Gujarat, underlined India’s intent to manufacture everything “from chips to ships.” His words echoed the momentum that has been building for years backed by structured policy, large investments, and a shared resolve to build one of the world’s most future-ready maritime ecosystems.

With over 7,500 kilometres of coastline and a location at the crossroads of global trade routes, India is naturally positioned to lead the maritime economy of the future. This strength is being strategically harnessed through landmark initiatives such as the Sagarmala Program and the Maritime India Vision 2030, both led by the union Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Inland Waterways.

Sagarmala’s 800-plus projects, ranging from modern ports and industrial clusters to coastal connectivity corridors, are reshaping India’s coastal economy. Meanwhile, Maritime India Vision 2030 envisions India among the global top ten maritime nations with world-class ports, sustainable infrastructure, and a globally competitive shipbuilding and ship repair ecosystem.

The cortex

The cortex is the brain’s stage and its spotlight, a wrinkled sheet of grey matter where everything that makes us human performs. It is thin, standing only a few millimetres tall, and yet, it holds our language, laughter, memories, dreams, passwords, and grudges. Beneath it lies machinery; above it, personality. It's the surface that thinks. If the brain were Mumbai, the cortex would be South Bombay—dense, opinionated, elegant, and convinced it runs the place.
