THE nutraceuticals industry in India has evolved markedly over time, shaped by the country's rich traditional medical knowledge and the rising global preference for health-oriented products.
Its development can be viewed in distinct phases, each playing a role in establishing nutraceuticals as a dynamic and expanding sector. The roots of this industry lie in ancient systems such as Ayurveda, Siddha, and Unani, which focus on preventive care and holistic health. These traditions advocate the use of natural herbs, spices, and diet-based formulations to maintain wellness and manage disease. Classical texts like the Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita emphasise the medicinal value of food, underlining nutrition as a cornerstone of health. Common ingredients including turmeric, ashwagandha, amla, and neem have historically been integral to Indian diets for both culinary and therapeutic purposes.
Following Independence, India gradually shifted its focus towards modern pharmaceuticals, yet interest in natural health products resurfaced during the 1980s and 1990s. Increased awareness of the benefits of dietary supplements and functional foods, along with the entry of multinational companies, revitalised the sector. These firms introduced Western supplement concepts while incorporating traditional Indian ingredients. The early 2000s proved to be a turning point, as globalisation enabled technology transfer, innovation, and improved manufacturing standards. Functional foods, fortified beverages, and supplements designed for urban consumers gained momentum, while Indian manufacturers successfully expanded into international markets, responding to strong demand for herbal and natural products in countries and regions such as the United States, Europe, and Southeast Asia.
