In this exclusive interview with Diplomatist Magazine, H.E. Mr. Yousef Abdelghani, Ambassador of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan to the Republic of India, shares his thoughts on the enduring partnership between Jordan and India. He highlights Jordan’s proactive role in promoting regional peace and stability, its commitment to multilateral diplomacy, and the shared vision with India on global issues. The Ambassador also outlines key diplomatic, trade, and cultural initiatives aimed at strengthening bilateral ties, fostering economic growth, and enhancing people-to-people connections.
-
How would you describe the current state of Jordan-India bilateral relations, and what are the key areas where both countries can further strengthen their partnership?
The current state of Jordan-India bilateral relations can be described as historical, warm, and based on mutual respect, with a long history of cooperation. The two countries have maintained strong diplomatic ties since 1950. The leadership of both nations meets regularly.
The latest exchange of high-level visits between HM King Abdullah II and HE Prime Minister Modi took place in 2018. The two leaders have met several times since then at international forums and have exchanged views over direct phone calls. These continued interactions have further solidified the relationship.
The key areas where Jordan and India can further strengthen their partnership include:
• Economic Cooperation: Expanding trade and investment opportunities, particularly in sectors like information technology, artificial intelligence, energy, transportation, and tourism.
• Cultural and Educational Exchanges: Enhancing people-to-people interactions through educational programs, scholarships, and cultural exchanges. Over 500 Jordanian students are currently studying in India, and more than 10,000 Jordanian alumni have graduated from Indian universities.
• Capacity Building: Providing technical assistance and training programs to support Jordan’s development efforts.
• Multilateral Cooperation: Collaborating in international forums to address mutual concerns and priorities.
In the near future, the two countries will hold political consultations between their respective Ministries of Foreign Affairs. By focusing on these areas, Jordan and India can continue to build a robust and mutually beneficial partnership.
