Masters Of Reality / Earl Of Hell

London 229

Chris Goss is, of course, some sort of genius. The unsung, and borderline unseen, co-producer of Rated R who provided just enough of his characteristic Iggy/Bowie Berlin-era fairy dust to elevate Queens Of The Stone Age from the critically acclaimed darlings of the desert-rock underground to credible mainstream contenders. Obviously, QOTSA have since more than prevailed commercially and have been regularly called upon to effusively C-C-C-C-C-Cocaine before capacity crowds in arenas and stadia. But Chris. Well, Chris (who, to all intents and purposes, is Masters Of Reality) is here. Now 229 is a top venue, but let's just say you'd have a hell of a job staging the Royal Tournament in its relatively snug confines. Like it or not, after 44 years (off and on) in the MOR game, Goss still inhabits the cosy arena of the cult artist. But does this small detail preclude him from putting on a staggeringly brilliant show? We'll get to that later. But no one's heard to demand a refund.
