The iconic Citizens Theatre reopens with a play exploring the quiet power of kindness

Silent Strength

THOSE that know The Gorbals, a neighbourhood in Glasgow on the south bank of the River Clyde, will know how much this area has changed in recent years and decades.

Yet one building there has remained a constant: the Citizens Theatre, which has been running as a theatre since 1878-albeit sometimes under a different name.

Through two world wars, the demolition of tenements and relocation of many residents in the 60s, the rise of looming tower blocks under the banner of urban renewal and their subsequent demolition, the theatre remained.

That is until 2018, when the Citz, as it is affectionately called, announced that it would be closing its doors for a major redevelopment.

This September, the long wait is finally over and the Citizens Theatre is reopening with a powerful new play.
