ECHOES OF THE SEA
Prestige Malaysia
|January 2026
Through a contemporary visual and spatial lens, a recent exhibition explored Southeast Asia's seafaring heritage.
The National Art Gallery (NAG) recently concluded Simulation: Voices From The Past, a month-long exhibition tracing the shared cultural heritage of Southeast Asia from the first century to the 15th century.
Conceived as a spatial interpretation of Ar. Dr Lim Teng Ngiom's book Voices from the Past, it explored how maritime trade, artistic traditions, belief systems and intangible cultural exchanges collectively shaped a regional identity that endures to this day.
Suspended from the gallery ceiling were five monumental lanterns, drifting weightlessly like vessels at sea. Each told a chapter of a larger story: the elegance of apsaras (celestial dancers) carved into temples across Angkor, Borobudur and Champa; the wayang kulit artform shared across Southeast Asia and China; the daring seafarers navigating the Pacific and South China Sea; sacred temple architecture as spiritual anchors; and elephants, once instruments of war from the Khmer and Siamese kingdoms to Malacca's resistance against the 1511 Portuguese invasion.
Grounding these narratives were standing lanterns inscribed with handwritten Javanese manuscripts derived from ancient Kawi script, alongside Sanskrit stone inscriptions that recorded religious, administrative and historical foundations. Together, they spoke of knowledge meticulously carried, adapted and preserved, inviting reflection on how the past continues to inform the present.
