CHOROTSAV - Goa's Festival of Thieves

One such unique ritual is the celebration of Chorutsav in certain villages of Goa. This is a festival where participants, representing thieves, are symbolically buried in the ground. To an outsider unfamiliar with the concept, this thrilling and spectacular event may evoke a mix of shock and intrigue.

What is Chorutsav?

Chorutsav or Chor Purne translates to "the festival of thieves"-Chor meaning thief and Utsav meaning festival or celebration. As strange as it may sound, this is an authentic cultural ritual in Goa, revealing its rich historical background. The festival is celebrated around the same time as Holi, when the larger Shigmo festival-a grand celebration with floats parading through Goa's cities-takes place. While much of the state is caught up in Shigmo festivities, rural villages hold their own unique rituals, drawing crowds to witness the distinctive celebrations of Chorutsav.
