Insights from Vusi Dalicuba on mastering winemaking

With a passion for crafting wines that reflect their origin, his journey is marked by a deep respect for nature, tradition and innovation

→ “LISTENING TO THE GRAPES" is more than just a metaphor for Vusi; it is a philosophy that guides his winemaking practice. Vusi famously laughs at his mantra inspired by Julius Caesar's "veni, vidi, vici" - "I came, I saw, I conquered." He admits, "I'm not sure I've conquered anything yet.

In winemaking, the vines always keep you humble." At just 31 years old, Vusi has rapidly established himself as a prominent winemaker at Vergenoegd Löw in Stellenbosch, Western Cape, and he has already achieved significant milestones in viniculture. Under his stewardship, Vergenoegd Löw's 2023 Family Collection Ottilie Malbec earned top honours at the SA Terroir Wine Awards, while the estate's 2023 Merlot clinched a Best-in-Class trophy at the esteemed 2025 Global Fine Wine Challenge. This accolade is often referred to as the "Grand Prix of wine contests", highlighting the exceptional quality of his wines.

Though the recognition can be overwhleming, for Vusi the essence of success lies beyond medals on a shelf. "Success in winemaking means knowing your vines - the soil, the climate, the rhythm of the grapes," he reflects.

His mentor, the internationally celebrated Abrie Beeslaar, has played an instrumental role.

"Technically, he's taught me that attention to detail is everything from vineyard to bottle," he says of Abrie. "Personally, he's shown me the value of staying focused, standing out, and not getting distracted by the noise."
