Carson wrote a trilogy of books about the sea. The second, The Sea Around Us (1951), essentially a biography of the oceans that presciently tackled the 21st-century issues of rising sea levels and melting glaciers, brought her to international prominence; it won a National Book award and was translated into 30 languages. Her first treat with the money she earned was a good binocular-microscope

Growing gains
I STILL cannot use my thumbs when potting up a rooted cutting or potting on a plant. I use my fingers. They are better at gauging the pressure needed to firm the compost, be it peat-free (lightness of touch is important) or soil-based (a little firmer). It is not something I learned from a book.
