Embrace the new trend for micro decorating – and perfect those finishing touches with minimal fuss and expense

Mini decor MAXIMUM IMPACT!

Style a footstool

A footstool isn't just for resting your feet - you can use a sturdy one in place of a coffee table, which means another surface to display your treasured items. The key here is to give them a solid surface, such as a tray or books underneath - a tray is great as it means you can easily lift it off if you do want to use it as a footstool. Start by picking a few items you like in different shapes and sizes - an uneven number always looks more attractive, so try three or five decorative pieces - and then play around until you're happy. Plants, books, candles and even items like a vintage camera, ornament or decorative bowl are ideal for this.

Beverley 3-seater sofa in Sinclair Cord Ivy Green, £1,500; Gloucester button back extra-large footstool in Alwyn Velvet Chocolate Brown, £600; Multi Sage Attleton mural, 3m, £250; Green Silchester 100% cotton rug, from £585; Bronze Holwell floor lamp, £225, all Laura Ashley

It's often the case that you know what you like when it comes to interiors and all the basics are there, but perhaps your home still doesn’t look exactly as you'd like it? That's where micro decorating comes in - where the finishing touches and smaller details make a big difference.

It’s less about redecorating whole spaces, and more about putting some good styling rules into place. And the best news is that, in many cases, you can use what you already own, so it’s not all about buying something new, either!
