CLASS MEETS COLOR WHEN A HILLTOP HOME IS ADORNED FOR THE HOLIDAYS

- ELLA SCHULTE

TUDOR TIDINGS

Gingerbread houses are constructed with great care come Christmastime, and they fascinate with all their sweet and colorful adornments. The details of the Tudor-style house of designer Meghan Blum, husband David, and their three children aren't as decadent, but they still lay down a foundation of charm that joyously welcomes Christmas.

Built in 1915 and situated in a historic Des Moines neighborhood, the traditional brick house is typically surrounded by snow during the holidays, making a storybooklike setting for a family with young children.

"This house is all about tradition, and that's me at my core," Meghan says. "Being able to layer in traditions through my decor and how we, as a family, treat the holidays is really special."

The exterior boasts exquisite millwork, which is the perfect precursor for interior spaces detailed with wainscoting, trim, and classic built-ins. Ample color and pattern energize the classic features.

In the foyer, black-and-white accents with geometric motifs team with a soft-under-foot stair runner featuring a Greek key design to contribute stylish layering and high contrast. Garland and greenery cascade down the banister, getting the first-impression space into the Christmas spirit.

Just off the foyer, the living room's expansive windows serve as a backdrop for the Christmas tree, covered from trunk to tip in trimmings including vibrant turquoise, delicate pink, and sparkling silver and gold.
