The kitchen is the heart of the home where meals are made, memories are shared, and chaos sometimes reigns. But like any hardworking space, your kitchen needs regular maintenance to keep it functional, safe, and looking great.

KITCHEN CARE – MAINTENANCE TIPS FOR KEY AREAS

With just a little routine care, you can significantly extend the life of your cabinets, counters, appliances, and plumbing.

Here's a DIY guide to caring for the key areas of your kitchen.

1. COUNTERTOPS: Clean, seal, and protect

Granite or natural stone

  • Wipe daily with a soft cloth and mild detergent.

  • Reseal annually to prevent staining. Test with a few drops of water - if they absorb quickly, it's time to reseal.

  • Avoid acidic cleaners that can etch the surface.

Laminate

  • Use a gentle cleaner, no abrasives.

  • Wipe up spills immediately to avoid water damage at seams.

  • Use cutting boards and hot pads to prevent burns and scratches.

Wood or butcher block

  • Disinfect with diluted vinegar.

  • Oil regularly with food-grade mineral oil to prevent cracking.

  • Sand and refinish as needed to keep a smooth surface.

2. CABINETS: Keep them clean, tight and organised

Surface Cleaning

  • Wipe down doors and handles weekly with a damp cloth and mild soap.

  • For greasy buildup, use a 1:1 vinegar-water mix or a degreaser approved for wood or laminate.
