DON'T LET YOUR GARDEN FALL FOUL OF A HEATWAVE WITH OUR EXPERT TIPS TO ENSURE IT THRIVES ALL SUMMER...

- LAUREN BRADBURY

NEED TO KNOW: Keep your cool

We're always a little torn in the summertime. On the one hand, we complain about the awful British weather, so much that it feels as though we are deserving of a heatwave. On the other hand, when it does get hot, it is often unbearable. So, when you are feeling the heat, imagine what the plants in your garden are having to deal with.

When you put so much time and effort into your garden, a heatwave can feel like a real kick in the teeth. Sure, your plants and flowers love the sunshine, but the high temperatures and hot air that come with it are a recipe for dry, crispy blooms and browning grass. Thankfully, we've got the lowdown on keeping your plants alive, and ensuring your garden remains a beautiful space to escape to when the weather is heating up.

1 WATER YOUR PLANTS AT THE RIGHT TIME

During a heatwave, your plants will struggle. And while it's important to keep on top of watering during the hot weather, you also want to avoid both underand over-watering. Hannah Rowson, gardening expert for J Parker's nurseries and garden centres, says, 'The best time to water is either in the early morning or late evening, while the temperatures are low. Doing this will ensure the water is able to run down into the soil to reach the roots of the plant, before the sun gets a chance to evaporate it.' If you water your plants during the middle of the day, it's unlikely that they will benefit from the watering, and become scorched and dry as a result.
