Your garden may be looking a little bare and lifeless at this time of year, but there are plenty of houseplants that you can fill your home with to bring some colour to your space. PAPERWHITES

The traditional paperwhite narcissus is so strongly scented, it will fill the house with fragrance for weeks. A great choice as a cut flower, it also works well as an indoor plant, as it will come out far earlier than the garden variety to give colour and scent when you most want it. Plant bulbs close together in pots filled with bulb fibre. Make sure the growing tips are protruding just above the top of the compost. Then put them in a cool, dark place until the blooms burst out.

HELLEBORES

Delicate hellebores make for a stunning winter houseplant as well as being a star of the seasonal garden. There are special varieties, such as 'Winter Beauty', that have been bred to thrive indoors and will look beautiful styled up with some cones and pine foliage. Also known as Christmas roses, they should be kept as cool as possible and given plenty of natural light, but not bright sunlight. Adding a layer of moss will help keep the compost damp to the touch. Regularly remove faded flowers to keep the blooms coming.
