1. EARN YOUR STRIPES

Stripes are a valuable tool in decorating. They draw the eye upwards and can create the illusion of height, which can be incredibly useful when it comes to decorating small spaces. 'Vertical stripes emphasise height better than any other pattern. Reaching up to the ceiling, they cultivate a sense of airy loftiness that can enlarge smaller spaces. Thick stripes in particular, especially those contrasted with a plane of white, offer up blocks of colour which also impart a sense of depth in a room,' says Rebecca Craig, lead designer at Sanderson. To soften the bold, graphic look, try adding cushions and beautifully draped curtains in floral fabrics, or contrasting rugs.
