My passion is transforming spaces and incorporating really clever joinery design,” says Kim Brzezek, whose design studio Hibernate Interiors is based in the seaside town of Mount Martha on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula.

The elegant kitchen Kim created for clients located in her scenic suburb is a stellar example of her considered approach.

The 1950s-era cottage is owned by a professional couple with three adult-aged children, two of whom live at home. The couple has renovated in stages since purchasing the property in the late 1990s; it wasn’t until early 2022 they decided it was time to tackle the kitchen.

The homeowner’s brief to Kim encompassed an understated yet beautiful kitchen with traditional touches and maximised functionality. “My client has a great eye and knew the aesthetic she wanted to achieve, but it was about honing the ideas,” Kim explains. The starting point for the colour scheme was the dramatically dark Dulux Domino, which the homeowner had used in the adjacent dining space.
