Semiquincentennial Coins Celebrating America's 250th Anniversary Were Years in the Making

|April / May 2026
The Semiquincentennial of the United States, a patriotic occasion celebrating the 250th anniversary of the nation throughout 2026, has been a topic of conversation for years in United States Mint circles.
The Revolutionary War was not originally planned for inclusion among the themes of the 2026 Semiquincentennial coinage.
COURTESY UNITED STATES MINT
The Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC), a Congressionally chartered organization that recommends coin designs to U.S. Mint and U.S. Treasury officials, began discussing Semiquincentennial coin themes and designs a half decade ago. The designs it considered were crafted from the diverse pool of freelance talent in the U.S. Mint Artistic Infusion Program (AIP) as well as full-time sculptors and engravers on the U.S. Mint payroll.
A PRELUDE TO THE SEMIQUINCENTENNIAL COINS
Planning and preparation for the 2026 Semiquincentennial coin program began years before the actual occasion as was the case in the early 1970s when the members of Congress initially introduced bills authorizing the production of coins to honor America’s Bicentennial in 1976. After the nation’s commemorative coin program was shut down in the mid-1950s amid ethics scandals and financial abuses, it was a tough sell getting U.S. Mint brass and lawmakers to approve a circulating commemorative-coin program honoring the nation’s Bicentennial.
Congress failed to pass any Bicentennial coin legislation in 1971 or 1972, while the Treasury opposed the idea altogether. Mint Director Mary Brooks initially went so far as to suggest that any redesign of the six then-circulating coins would be “a disaster.” She eventually warmed up to the idea of circulating Bicentennial coins and talked Treasury Secretary George Shultz into supporting legislation authorizing the commemorative program, which was approved in 1973.
