Uveitis Explained Understanding Inflammation of the Eye's Middle Layer

Health Vision

September2025

Our eyes are complex organs made up of several layers that work together to help us see clearly.

- Dr. Hareesh K V Abhishek Nethradhama

One important part is the uvea, the middle layer of the eye, which supplies blood to many structures inside the eye. When this layer becomes inflamed, the condition is called uveitis.

What Is Uveitis?

Uveitis is an inflammation of the uvea, which includes three parts:

  • Iris - the colored part of the eye

  • Ciliary body - helps focus the lens

  • Choroid - provides oxygen and nutrients to the retina

Since the uvea plays a big role in eye function, inflammation here can affect vision and cause discomfort. Uveitis can affect one or both eyes and may develop suddenly or gradually.

Types of Uveitis

Doctors classify uveitis based on the area of the uvea that is inflamed:

  • Anterior uveitis - affects the front (iris), the most common form

  • Intermediate uveitis - affects the ciliary body and nearby areas

  • Posterior uveitis - affects the choroid at the back of the eye

  • Panuveitis – when all parts of the uvea are inflamed
