Understanding SCIATICA When Back Pain Radiates Down the Leg
Health Vision
|July 2025
Sciatica can be painful and limiting, but with proper diagnosis and treatment, most people recover fully without surgery. Early intervention, physical therapy, and lifestyle changes play a key role in managing the condition and preventing recurrence.
Sciatica is a common yet often misunderstood condition that causes pain radiating from the lower back down to one or both legs. This pain can range from mild discomfort to severe, debilitating agony. It is not a disease in itself, but rather a symptom of an underlying issue affecting the sciatic nerve — the longest nerve in the human body.
Sciatica refers to pain that follows the path of the sciatic nerve, which branches from the lower spine, passes through the buttocks, and extends down the back of each leg. This pain typically affects only one side of the body and can be accompanied by tingling, numbness, or muscle weakness in the leg or foot.
What Causes Sciatica?
Sciatica occurs when the sciatic nerve is compressed, irritated, or inflamed. The most common causes include:
- Herniated or Slipped Disc: When a disc in the spine bulges or ruptures, it can press against the sciatic nerve.
- Spinal Stenosis: Narrowing of the spinal canal, which puts pressure on the nerves.
- Piriformis Syndrome: A muscle in the buttocks (the piriformis) can spasm and compress the sciatic nerve.
